WissensWerte – animated video clips for political education

WissensWerte (http://www.edeos.org/en/project_wissenswerte.html) is a project by edeos - digital education (http://www.edeos.org), a small Berlin-based agency specialized in producing and distributing web-based knowledge content.
Within the project, the german nonprofit organisation /e-politik.de/ e.V. publishes and distributes a series of innovative animated video clips for political education. Technically state of the art and didactically elaborated, the clips offer an exciting way to learn about politics.

One of WissensWerte videos is about Human Rights and can be watched on the edeos YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/weareedeos. This video is available in English, French, Spanish and German.

Eyes on the Skies

Eyes on the Skies consists of a 60-minute DVD and a 132-page, full-colour book, exploring the development of the telescope over the four centuries following Galileo's breakthrough, along with all the astronomical riches this instrument has revealed. The DVD gathers animations, simulations and stunning photographs, displaying the heavens revealed by astronomers while the film's host and narrator explain these unveiled cosmic answers, as well as pointing out areas of continuing mystery. Rounding out the Eyes on the Skies package is a sturdy, hardcover textbook that complements the film, creating a comprehensive educational experience.

Eyes on the Skies, by telling the history of the telescope in astronomy, aims to offer a compelling perspective on how human knowledge of space and our place in it has been completely revolutionised in the last 400 years. The Universe is a vast, complex, mind-boggling realm; showing science's step-wise visual foray into the final frontier will help make astronomy much more accessible and "real" to students of most ages. The DVD runs for 60 minutes and contains subtitles in several languages. The Eyes on the Skies book is available in English, German, Finnish, Korean and Japanese. DVD and chapter excerpts, along with beautiful photographs are also freely available to the general public, teachers and students worldwide.

The Eyes on the Skies movie is presented by Dr. J aka Dr. Joe Liske from European Southern Observatory (ESO - http://www.eso.org/public), and the authors are Govert Schilling (Alles over Sterrenkunde, the Netherlands - http://allesoversterrenkunde.nl) and Lars Lindberg Christensen (European Space Agency (ESA) - http://www.esa.int/esaCP/index.html and ESO, Germany), who strive to contribute to the popularisation of science and technology.

Neu in Berlin - Online Video Soap

The Online Video Soap "Neu in Berlin" was created by LinguaTV GmbH, Germany (http://www.linguatv.com/index.php?) to support students who wished to learn authentic German (DaF) with Online Videos. It is an edutainment format using online videos and games for learning German (as a foreign speaker). Based on a modular structure in a series of subtitled videos the two main characters, German-speaking Katja and Alexander accidently meet one another in Berlin and since Alexander is new to the city, Katje gives him a tour of Berlin. They interact in recognisable situations such as meeting & greeting people, asking for directions, ordering food & beverages, shopping and other daily activities.

The videos are supplemented by a series of lessons and games that help learners test their understanding and memory of newly-learned words, spoken and written texts. A few of the games are quizzes, crossword puzzles, … but on LinguaTV, the online-video learning content is also embedded in an online community or training platform. With a cross-platform point system, learners can see their overall progress and compare their experiences with other learners. They can also interact through integrated video chat and meet virtually or take a language course in the virtual classroom. The audio-visual content gives the learner interesting impressions from different countries, people and cultures whilst training listening comprehension at the same time.

A more detailed English description of the project is available in the Showcase on the MEDEA Awards website at http://www.medea-awards.com/showcase/online-video-soap-neu-in-berlin
