MEDEAnet webinar “Researching Media Literacy in Europe”

Several large scale studies have been carried out in recent years into the topic of media and film literacy in Europe. This webinar highlights a number pointing to their main findings, conclusions and recommendations. Studies discussed include the one carried out by the EMEDUS (European Media Literacy Education Study) project team, which will be presented by project manager José Manuel Pérez Tornero and Laura Cervi, from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona in Spain. Further on MEDEAnet partners Nicoleta Fotiade (ActiveWatch, Romania) and Sofia Papadimitriou (Educational RadioTelevision of Ministry of Education, Greece) highlight the main findings in the report: "Charting Media and Learning in Europe" produced by the MEDEAnet team, which will report specifically in its second year on the extent to which media literacy is incorporated into curriculum design for compulsory level education and to charting organisations actively engaged in this process and examples of good practice.

Thanks to the multiple functionalities mobile devices like tablets and smart phones are offering it's becoming more easy to let students develop their own multimedia eBook in class and to let them become their own publisher.
During this one-hour webinar the speakers described what possibilities exist for teachers to let their students easily develop their own learning resources and what you should respect in terms of didactics and techniques when you start to implement eBook creation in your own class.

Andreas Sexauer from the Distance Learning Centre at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) demonstrated the technical possibilities apps like the creative book builder are offering and how easy new learning material can be developed.
Our second speaker, Maurice Florêncio Bonnet from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education addressed the question on how teachers can integrate this new media tool in their class from a more didactical perspective compared to “traditional” learning material. This webinar was held in German.

This webinar is aimed at teachers, educators and trainers interested in introducing eBook production in their class.
It was held on 11 October at 4 pm and attended by 25 participants from 4 countries (Germany, Austria, Greece & USA)

MEDEAnet webinar “Creative Commons – what you have to respect when you produce your own media”

More and more content and media are available on the internet under the Creative Commons (CC) licences which can be freely used once the terms of CC licensing is properly respected. CC offers teachers and trainers a lot of opportunities when developing their own teaching materials and media. On the sixth MEDEAnet webinar, that took place on 6 June 2013 (4-5pm CET), Billy Meinke (Creative Commons, USA) introduced 35 participants from 16 different countries to the different CC licences and what it means for a user if he/she wants to use such a licence on either his or her own materials or in using materials with this type of licence. This webinar was aimed at educational media producers as well as teachers, educators and trainers interested in developing their own teaching material and media.

MEDEAnet webinar “Videos for teaching”

On 21 March 2013 MEDEAnet organised a one hour webinar about integrating videos in teaching and how it influences the learning behaviour and learning effects, with a special focus on the recent trend 'Flipping the Classroom', in which students study the main content already at home (for example through videos) so that they can use what they’ve learned to realise concrete exercises & projects during the face-to-face class. This online event attracted 40 participants from 15 different countries, who were mainly teachers and trainers.

Our first speaker, Olaf de Groot (De Verdieping at stichting Kennisnet, the Netherlands) focused on flipping the classroom model, how this concept can be integrated in the daily lessons and how it effects the teaching and learning experiences in school. Our second speaker, Bram Faems (Jonatan Berkenboom and KlasCement, Belgium) presented a toolkit he developed for teachers to let students produce their own videos - a flipped flipping the classroom model so to speak, and he also discussed the students’ learning experiences when developing their own videos. After the presentations, participants could ask questions in an open discussion and are free to still ask questions in our online forum discussion on this webinar.

MEDEAnet webinar "Copyright Considerations for Educational Media Producers"

During this one hour webinar/live quiz 38 participants from 10 countries learned about the most important IPR and copyright rules you have to respect when you are developing your own media content for educational purposes. Participants were invited to test their knowledge of copyright and other IPR issues by means of an interactive question and answer session hosted by quizmaster Mathy Vanbuel (managing director of ATiT, Belgium and Secretary of MEDEA/Media & Learning Association) while main jury member Jeroen Verschakelen from ICRI - KULeuven, an expert in copyright and media law, provided the relevant legal and practical comments on copyright for educational media producers.

This webinar was aimed at educational media producers as well as teachers, educators and trainers interested in developing their own educational media. In a time where all sorts of different content seem to be available for free on the internet - from books, pictures, music, film to comprehensive scientific texts – it is important to know how you can use this content and also how you can protect content you have developed yourself which you also want to share via the web.

Before the end of 2012, these two experts are still available to answer questions about copyright and related cases in the online discussion in the Media & Learning Community of Practice. MEDEAnet webinar "Meet the MEDEA Awards 2012 finalists online"

MEDEAnet organised a webinar on 22 November 2012 with the two award winners of the MEDEA Awards 2012: Petros Michailidis (5th Primary school of Alexandroupolis, Greece) who presented the eTwinning project 'And the Oscar goes to ... ', and Catherine Loire (TICE, Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University, France) who presented the video 'Quand la colère fait tomber les masques'. They described how they have successfully used media to enhance the learning process in their specific circumstances and the 25 participants were given an opportunity to exchange experiences and to ask questions during a moderated video discussion.

This webinar was the first of a webinar series MEDEAnet is organising with the MEDEA Awards 2012 finalists to celebrate the MEDEA Awards 2012 and share good practices on producing and using educational media with teachers and trainers as well as representatives from educational ministries and professional educational media producers interested in finding out more about innovative practices in media-enhanced education and training.

MEDEAnet webinar “The Case for Media Education in the Classroom”

32 participants took part in this one-hour webinar to get an insight into different ways to integrate various media education schemes and approaches in the classroom in order to improve their students’ daily engagement with the media.

Nicoleta Fotiade from ActiveWatch in Bucharest, who is an expert in media education, gave a short introduction to various media education schemes and critical thinking methods in training settings that could help your students open their minds towards their critical interaction and use of information media. Using Nicoleta’s presentation as starting point, Marianna Vivitsou from the University of Helsinki in Finland discussed the examples provided from the pedagogic point of view and extrapolate them into a broader discussion based on her own media education experience. She shared her experience of a collaborative wiki project with Greek students in 2009-2010.

Following those two short presentations of around 20 minutes each, participants were given an opportunity to exchange experiences and to ask questions during a moderated online live discussion.
This webinar was aimed at teachers and trainers as well as representatives from educational ministries responsible for the development of the overall curriculum in different regions and countries.

Finishing shooting and entering the post-production phase is crucial in all video making and especially in collective works like student productions. In this webinar we will present techniques of organising rushes, checking our initial intentions in relation to our shootings and spending time for preparation and planning before going into the editing room. We will also give advice on choosing and making the most of our editing software as well as some tips on editing.
