War on Waste

Green Schools 'War on Waste' is a light-hearted short video about environment and recycling, created in 2010 by young pupils from primary school St Francis School, Priorswood, Dublin in collaboration with NearTV, Near Media Co-operative (Ireland). The pupils taking part in the video explain the importance of recycling and what type of waste can go into the different recycling bins used in Ireland. Because the Dublin City Council decided to put recycling bins into a local Travellers site for the first time (Travellers are an indigenous minority group in Ireland), pupils of the school that were also Travellers were involved in the making of this video to make them aware of the importance of these recycling bins.

The video was shown as part of lessons on the environment and recycling. As this was a community project with a particular emphasis on encouraging young people and their parents to recycle, a viewing was arranged in the school for everyone to watch the video. Near TV believes, that by creating a sense of occasion for the young people and their parents, they would see the importance in recycling and bring with them this new knowledge into their homes and daily life.

Exploring the Nature: Five Stories

Exploring the Nature: Five Stories (Pieci stāsti par dabu), is a documentary film series that was created in 2009, by ELM MEDIA, Latvia (http://www.elmmedia.lv/lv/filmas/daba/pieci_stasti_par_dabu) with the help of the Latvian Fund for Nature, a non-governmental nature conservation and research organisation.
Educating Latvian youngsters on climate change and the impact humans have on the environment, this series is made up of 5 educational films on five different biotopes (floodplain meadows, inland waters, forests, marshlands and sea coast) and their management. Each film, also available online, is a road movie with 3 students travelling around Latvia and exploring nature by visiting protected areas and countryside farms and meeting experts from the Latvian Fund for Nature. By following these adventurous travel stories by their peers, teenagers are encouraged to associate with the environmental problems discussed in the films and to change their general attitude to one where all members of society are involved in preserving the environment by maintaining natural diversity and protecting natural habitats. Students learn about three main topics: the natural processes that are going on in these five main natural biotopes that cover almost the whole Latvian ecosystem, the different species that live in each biotope and what makes them different and they also learn about the importance of each species.

The Green Energy

The Greek programme “Green Energy” is an educational documentary created in 2008 by the Educational RadioTelevision of the Greek Ministry of Education about renewable sources of energy.
It is available on TV, DVD and the Internet and it highlights the types of “green energy” that can substitute petroleum and petrolic byproducts in Mediterranean countries are demonstrated in an educational Centre of Renewable Sources of Energy. Pupils of secondary schools can view this documentary as part of their environment education, but teachers can of course use the video continuously in other lessons and throughout the year.

By viewing this documentary and discussing it in class, pupils can:
- get to know the types of green energy (solar energy, wind energy, geothermic energy and biomass)
- learn how they are utilized
- realize the environmental, economical and social consequences in modern societies
- promote green energy as a shield to climate changes.

Effectiveness of video as an instructional medium in teaching rural children agricultural and environmental sciences

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of video in comparison with selected instructional media for teaching primary school pupils Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. It examined also the effect of gender and grade on the performance of the pupils taught with four instructional media. 240 pupils from 3 rural primary schools in Badagry Local government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria, were taught three topics drawn from Agriculture and Environmental sciences. The non-randomized quasi-pretest posttest experimental design was used in finding out which of the pupils in the four experimental groups – video, realia, charts and No instructional media performed best. The study revealed that the pupils taught with the video performed equally as well as those taught with real objects (Realia). While both groups performed significantly better than those taught with chart and without instructional medium. There was no significant difference in performance based on the gender. With regards to grade (Primary 5 and 6), only the group taught without instructional medium had a significant difference. The pupils in Primary 6 did better than those in Primary 5. The study concludes that video is as effective as the traditional teacher in teaching Primary school children Agriculture and Environmental issues. This confirms the assertion of many researchers of the potential of using video as an instructional medium in teaching varying subjects to adults, youths and children in the formal school system. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. The four methods that can be used by the teacher were recommended. An organisational structure in each state and video equipment needed for effective take off of the video programme in Primary schools in Nigeria were suggested.
