amara (powered by Universal Subtitling)

amara (formerly known as Universal Subtitles) is a community platform that allows for easily captionning and translating of the videos one produces, by seeking assistance from the viewers. Subtitling not only increases the geographical appleal of the vides by adding language versions, but also has the additional advantage of making videos accessible for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. The subtitling (translation and subtitle text addition) is done by volunteering viewers, like a wiki: easy, free and fast with no software to install. As of today August 15 2011) over 117000 videos have already been subtitled with Universal Subtitles.

Amara gives individuals, communities, and larger organizations the power to overcome accessibility and language barriers for online video. The tools are free and open source and make the work of subtitling and translating video simpler, more appealing, and, most of all, more collaborative.

The benefits of captioning and subtitling are immense:
- Captions make videos accessible for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Translations make it possible for all of us to watch video in languages that we don't speak
- Video creators get: better SEO, more views, access to a far bigger (potentially multilingual and global) audience, accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing viewers, and more

Amara is composed of three main parts:
- A subtitle creation and viewing tool (aka the widget)
- A collaborative subtitling website
- An open protocol for subtitle search/delivery

The ANP (Netherlands national news agency) is the most important news supplier in The Netherlands. It provides news coverage for the Dutch daily newspapers, radio, television and the internet. ANP was founded in 1934 by the daily newspapers in The Netherlands. In the last few decades market circumstances have changed rapidly and therefore the foundation was converted into a private company. Since May 2001 ANP operates independently in the media market, allowing the company to increase its commercial activities. Nowadays ANP produces some 160,000 news stories and 100,000 photographs a year, tailored to the various needs and styles of the news media.

Promethean Planet

Promethean's aim is to unlock the potential of human achievement in education and training at all ages around the world creating, developing, supplying and supporting leading edge, interactive learning technology.
Promethean Planet is a large teacher online community of unparalleled peer and technical support as well as a warehouse of premium and free resources - including interactive lessons, games, educator forums, and training courses. Resources are organized by subject (Math, Science, History, Language Arts, Vocational Skills...) and age range. There are also a lot of tips and best practice.

Monkey Labs

Monkey Labs, an educational video game, was developed in 2009 by game studio Larian Studios and educational book publisher die Keure (Belgium). The first in the Monkey Tales series, it's a 3D videogame in which students have to solve various mathematics challenges. Following an intriguing narrative in which the player enters the subterranean laboratory of Monkey Labs by accident, the student/player sees a seemingly abandoned research complex and it is up to the player to unveil the mysteries within, and save the monkeys and scientists that are locked up inside this place of surprises and plot-twists.

Players have to win educational mini-games and compete with in-game characters to get ahead in the game and discover more about the background story through meeting with new characters and collecting information. Featuring puzzle elements is the fun and immersive nature of the game with game objects such as crates, moving platforms, lasers, magnets, mirrors, switches and buttons, the rooms are set up as environmental puzzles challenging the player, and rather than being faced with dull maths exercises: the player is steering a rocket ship by solving equations, getting students excited about mathematics and learning without even knowing it.

'Kaatje' is a hosting concept for the youngest viewers of KETNET (http://www.ketnet.be), the TV channel for children from Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT), the Flemish public broadcaster in Belgium. Kaatje is a little girl who lives in a snowglobe (with stars instead of snow) together with her friend Kamiel, a dinosaur and her doll 'Eendje' (little duck). The three of them play together and discover the world while Kaatje thinks she knows everything and is always right, although she also makes mistakes. And Kamiel just adores Kaatje; their adventures are programmed in between the other programmes, so they are hosting little children through their TV hour.

The adventures of Kaatje have no link with the content of the programmes, but what is very important in 'Kaatje' is creativity and interaction, stimulating little children to sing and dance along, ... Toddlers and pre-schoolers go through an exciting period of development and learn - both at home and in school - colours, how to draw, read and write, handicraft, ride a bike, climb, tie their laces, play with other kids, … The world of Kaatje (both on TV and online) stimulates a number of these skills through the various online games. Children for example practise hand-eye coordination (through Bumba's shaking game, Kaatje's balloon game and labyrinth game, learn colours, sounds, new words, figures, learn to make associations (which figure does not fit, find the difference and memory game), and Kaatje gives children the opportunity to discover new things and stimulates their imagination.

I animate and I communicate (@ni & m@te) + I integrate (Make @ wiz)

These are 2 project websites created in 2008 by the Free primary schools Meulebeke in Belgium (http://www.sintamandusmeulebeke.be) in relation to an eTwinning project.

For “I animate and I communicate” (http://www.sintamandusmeulebeke.be/animations/aniandmate.htm) the twin @ni (a girl) and m@te (a boy) want to travel around the world and so they visit children’s classroom, school, city or country. Children from all over the world create animations to present their environment, culture and their way of life. They turn into @ni and m@te (two stick figures) and choose a view or scenery of the country or region where they live as the background of the animation.

For “I integrate” the project website is called “Make @ wiz” (http://www.sintamandusmeulebeke.be/myworld/makeawiz.htm) in which children dream about the future and try to build a better world step by step and 'stone by stone'. One team discovers a problem, makes a wish and the other team works out a solution. The children create animations showing their ideas and possible solutions to world problems after which they are shown on the website by the funny wizard 'Wizzy'. The topics range from protection of nature, environmental pollution, famine, children’s rights, racism, immigration to road safety.


Studiecoach is a free online resource for study advice or digital coach and was created by the Dutch Open University (http://www.ou.nl) which is specialised in higher education for adult students through supported distance learning. Studying in distance learning requires new and different study methods from the traditional classroom learning; in distance education there are fewer contact hours and there is more self-study which requires more self-discipline. Following the university's open public nature of providing resources, Studiecoach is freely available for students and non-OU students.

The Studiecoach website combines several media types and activities: video, tests, text, games, exercises, exam and training. The themes are: time management, anxiety, multiple choice examtraining, oral presentation, written presentation, mindmapping, meditation, finding scientific information on the Internet. All themes are visualised in the form of a mindmap and each topic is introduced by a short video and students can access further content and training programs or register directly at one of the training programs in the study center. In addition to Studiecoach, the Open University organises a series of workshops around these themes at different locations in the Netherlands, where students (and non-students) can meet each other and discuss the topics at hand.

The Big Myth

The Big Myth is an interactive, community-building learning website and CD-ROM, presenting a collection of 25 creation myths from around the world using Flash animation, storytelling, sound and music. It is available in English and Dutch and designed for group learning for ages 7-14. The myths themselves are the central focus of the site, but the entire environment is made up of six sections, including a Teachers Guide, Discussion Forum, Write Your Own Creation Myth area and Library, making it a fully-integrated educational website that fits in with religious studies or world cultural program of the common international curriculum, as well as within ancient history or even remedial English or Dutch language classes.
